Our Humble Beginning:

Creditnews.com is a four year old website that grew out of a single publication known as Creditor's Edge.

This publication was created in 1984 when its developer, Stephen Bastien, was a financial executive for a large Chicago chemical manufacturer.

Mr. Bastien shipped, on open account, $100,000 in merchandise to a new customer, only to find that his new customer had filed bankruptcy the day before. Information about the bankruptcy was hidden in a small article in the back of the Wall Street Journal.

In addition, Mr. Bastien purchased the necessary credit reports on this new customer but there was no indication they were in financial trouble or on the verge of bankruptcy.

With little time to read the Wall Street Journal as thoroughly as he knew he needed to, and with the major credit reporting agencies having no up-to-date information on this new customer, Mr. Bastien recognized the need for a publication that furnished up-to-date, company business information on financially-challenged companies in a brief , easy-to-read format. Gathering information from hundreds of sources each day, Creditor's Edge became that publication.

In addition, while gathering this information on financially-challenged companies, information on fast-growing companies was also made available. The gathering of this more positive company information resulted in a sister publication known as Companies On The Move.

Also, both of these publications have been combined into one generic publication containing information on both finanacially-challenged and fast-growing companies. This "combined" publication is known as the U.S. Business Journal.

Mr. Bastien and his staff began further categorizing the information they gathered into retail and industrial categories--resulting in two additional publications: The Retailer/Supplier Watch and the Industrial Manufacturers Report.

All publications are now available in weekly hard copy publication or daily e-newspaper format.

Today, with offices in downtown Evanston, Illinois, only two blocks from Northwestern University and 20 minutes from downtown Chicago, the Creditnews.com staff is dedicated to providing the latest in business information and company news on the nation's PRIVATE and PUBLIC companies.
